Banned driver jailed for half-mile shops errand
A MAN was put behind bars for four months after he drove just half a mile to the shops.
Lacina Diabate was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after driving a car while disqualified.
The court heard that before the incident took place the 47-yearold’s daughter was cooking him dinner.
His daughter did not have some of the ingredients needed so Diabate got in the car and drove to the shop.
However, he had already been disqualified from driving.
Procurator Fiscal Niall Macdonald said: “The facts are very brief.
“The offence took place at 8pm on a two-way road in a residential area.
“Police were driving on patrol and they spotted the vehicle pulling up near them.
“They did a check on their computer system.
“Once they spoke to the accused he identified himself and they realised he was disqualified.
Diabate’s defending solicitor said: “He is only too aware that the court take a very dim view on a person who drove while being disqualified.
“He recognises the position he is in being someone who has disregarded a court order.”
The solicitor asked sentencing sheriff Adair to take the accused’s background in to account.
He said his client is married with two children.
He added: “His 18-year-old was making dinner and was short of some ingredients.
“It was raining and he drove the short distance to the Spar shop in Drumchapel.
“He was stopped by police around 200 yards from his home address.”
The solicitor also added that Diabate had sold his car so that he was not tempted to drive during his ban again.
He admitted that on January 12 this year on Kinfauns Drive in Drumchapel drive a car while disqualified.
He also admitted that on the same day in the same street he drove the car without insurance.
The sheriff sentenced him to four months in prison and disqualified from driving for six years.
Sheriff Adair said that he had no alternative but to send Diabate to prison.
