Kids joining Culture bid Blocked drains warning

- By ÉMER O’TOOLE

SCHOOLKIDS will be playing their part in the Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid.

Over 120 pupils from Renfrewshire will be attending the event at the University of the West of Scotland on Thursday.

The S3 pupils will be working towards the creation of an idea to be included in the bid.

They will discuss and agree what ‘culture’ means to them and then come up with an idea about how pupils in Renfrewshire could work together on an initiative, which could be submitted as a component of the Paisley 2021 bid.

Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “As proud and proactive supporters of the Paisley 2021 bid, we are delighted to be running another event on our Paisley Campus to promote the town for the City of Culture title.

“The University regularly works with schools to help raise aspirations and awareness of future possibilities.” MORE than 2500 reports of blocked sewers and drains are recorded in Glasgow every year, according to Scottish Water.

Although the figure had decreased by 16% since 2013, Scottish Water statistics suggest that 80% of these blockages are entirely avoidable because they are caused by people putting the wrong things down their toilets and sinks.

The ‘keep the water running smoothly campaign’, launched this week, highlights the damage that can be caused by people wrongly disposing of fats, oils and grease down sinks and wipes and cotton buds down toilets.

The campaign involves talking to primary school pupils about how they can be water efficient.

In the past year, Scottish Water has visited 37 schools, 18 of which are in the Glasgow area, and aims to visit even more this year.

In 2016, Glasgow had seven blocked drains per year for every 1000 properties.
