Another600student flats in plans pipeline

- By CONNOR McCANN

PLANS have been lodged to convert an old printing press building in to flats to house hundreds of students.

The proposal for the new student accommodation is the latest in a number of developments planned for the city.

If successful the plans, lodged with Glasgow City Council planners, would see the students moving in to the former printing works of Scottish media group DC Thomson.

The building is near the Scottish Fire & Rescue and passport office is bounded by Port Dundas Road, Renton Street and Milton Street.

A design statement which accompanies the application said it would offer a “high quality development providing 600 beds along with social spaces, a gym, a cafe bar, games rooms and study rooms. The plans also boast a courtyard area and storage areas for bikes.

The design statement, provided by Raglan Development Ltd, said: “The development has been carefully designed to respond to the site’s context and the surrounding townscape.

“The overall scale of the development is in line with that of the adjacent properties while providing a natural ‘step’ between the existing Passport office and 10 storey Newton building to the south and the multi-storey car park currently under construction to the north.

“The height of the south facing element of the develop- ment at Milton Street has been reduced to reflect the historical significance of the listed buildings to the south west.”

It adds that the building is not within a conservation area although there are listed buildings in close proximity.

These include the A-listed Scottish Ambulance Service building, the B-listed Piping Centre and A-listed Orient buildings.

The statement then goes on to say that the development coincides with Glasgow City Council’s support for the development of student accommodation throughout the city.

Thousands of new student flats are in the pipeline for locations across Glasgow.

A total of 33 developments are planned and, if they all go ahead, will provide more than 12,000 beds.
