Cup talisman hopes No.1 jersey is in the Can

- By JOHN McGILL

HAMILTON’S Scottish Cup hero Remi Matthews hopes he’s done enough to keep his place between the sticks.

Matthews pulled off three stunning saves in the dramatic penalty shoot-out against Dunfermline in midweek to help his team earn a quarter-final shot against Rangers at Ibrox.

The stopper has fought his way back from the sidelines to reclaim the gloves ahead of Gary Woods.

Now he’s banking on his midweek heroics to make him a first pick wiuth boss Martin Can- ning for tomorrow’s crunch clash with Partick Thistle at Firhill.

He said: “It is what it is. Gary Woods has done well when he’s played, and I’ve come back to fight for the No.1spot.

“I can only do what I can in the games I get the opportunity.

“The gaffer’s given me the chance in the last two cup games and I think I can say I’ve repaid his faith.

“We move on to Saturday, and with the decision he makes I’m professional enough to get on and work hard either way.

“But I like to think I’m in his thoughts after the Dunfermline results. We’ve just got to focus on this massive game on Saturday as a team now.”

“We’ll see what happens. Anything can happen in football.

“I nearly knocked myself out on the post during the game so could have been home by half nine!”
