Assault rap for man on visit to dementia mum
A MAN who attacked staff at a care home while visiting his mother has avoided jail time.
Alan Weir appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to acting in an abusive manner at the Almond Court Care Home.
He also admitted to assaulting one member of care home staff during the incident.
The procurator fiscal depute told the court that Weir, of Killoch Drive, Knightswood, arrived at the Drumchapel Place care home to visit his mother, as it was his birthday.
She resides there as she suffers from dementia and has recently had a stroke.
On arrival he attended the front entrance where he asked to be allowed in to see his mother.
A member of staff buzzed the 36-year-old i n before later discovering that he was only permitted to visit his mother at certain times, due to a recommendation by the social work department.
Staff then approached Weir and asked to leave the property, telling him that he was not allowed to visit at that time.
On hearing this, Weir started shouting and swearing.
He was heard to say “f*** this”, “f*** this place” and “if you don’t go away I’m going to do you in”.
Staff ushered Weir out of the front entrance when he continued his tirade of abuse.
He called one care assistant an abusive name.
Police were called and later attended at Weir’s home where he was placed under arrest.
He responded this by stating that he was “provoked”.
Weir’s defence agent commented that his client has shown remorse for the incident.
He added that he had been having ongoing problems with staff at the care home.
Since the incident, Weir has not been able to visit his mother, who was recently admitted to hospital.
A previous bail condition has prevented any contact with the home.
The Sheriff implemented a structured deferred sentence for Weir.
In addition, she lifted the conditions, allowing him to visit his mother when allowed to do so by the social work department.
