Aitken’s point is made on drop fear
DUMBARTON manager Stephen Aitken has told his players every point they get between now and the end of the season will be precious in their battle to avoid the spectre of relegation.
The Sons head to Dunfermline today looking to keep ahead of Raith Rovers, Ayr United and St Mirren in the battle to beat the drop in the Ladbrokes Championship as well as potentially jumping above their hosts.
Aitken said: “With Ayr United and St Mirren winning in midweek the league has tightened up in the bottom half. Every point from here on in will be precious.”
“There are midweek games and people are estimating points based on games in hand but everyone has still to play each other at least once so it is a very fluid situation.
“The one certainty is that the more points you gather the better your season will be.”
Dumbarton’s season started in defeat at East End Park and Aitken is looking to avoid the 4-3 disappointment his side experienced that day.
He recalled: “It was a bizarre game. We took the lead and then found ourselves 4-1 down.
“We scored two injury-time penalties and could have even gone on to get a point. Dunfermline have a lot of quality in their ranks and they will be on a high after coming back from two goals down to draw at Easter Road last weekend.
“They will be expecting to beat us and open up a gap, but we will go there looking to meet our own objectives.”
