HILL:IWAS SOLUCKY TOAVOID SPOTOF BOTHER...

- By CHRIS JACK

CLINT HILL was relieved he didn’t cost Rangers at Parkhead just seconds after he rescued a point with his first Old Firm goal.

The defender earned the Light Blues a share of the spoils on derby day as he converted at the back post after Craig Gordon had saved Emerson Hyndman’s shot.

As Celtic searched for a last gasp winner, Hill appeared to impede striker Leigh Griffiths before he could unleash a shot just yards from goal. Referee Bobby Madden waved away calls for a penalty as the Hoops were left frustrated and denied a chance to snatch a fourth Old Firm win this term.

Griffiths and boss Brendan Rodgers were bemused by the controversial call and Hill admits he had an anxious few seconds as the home crowd appealed for a spot kick.

The former Queens Park Rangers centre-back said: “To play in such a big game like the Old Firm is an achievement in itself and to score such an important goal is definitely up there in my long career.

“It could have gone either way and with it being here at their place, nine times out of ten it is given.

“It was a last-ditch [tackle] to try and get the ball. I don’t know if I got it or not.

“I thought we deserved a bit of luck over the course of the game.

“I am pleased for everyone involved that we got a point and a positive result. You are always conscious of it with a last ditch tackle like that. Thankfully for us it didn’t go and we got a bit of luck that I thought we deserved over the course of the 90 minutes.

“I would say we are probably lucky in terms of it being at Celtic and if a challenge goes in with their fans and the noise they make then it puts the referee under pressure.

“Thankfully we got the bit of luck that we deserved and came away with a positive point in the end.”
