Clyde struggle to stop the slide

-

CLYDE’S grip on league football suffered a double blow on Saturday.

Their 1-0 defeat to title-chasing Arbroath saw the Bully Wee slip further towards the League Two play-off zone, while bottom markers Cowdenbeath’s win over Berwick closed the gap on ninth-placed Clyde at the basement to five points.

And that has turned this weekend’s clash with Edinburgh City, who sit just above the Broadwood side, into a six-pointer for the club’s interim management duo Jon Paul McGovern and Peter MacDonald.

Mark Whatley’s first-half goal was the deciding factor at Gayfield. But McGovern is convinced his players can haul themselves out of the relegation battle.

He said: “We take some good points. They are a good side who are trying to win the league but I thought we more than matched them for long periods.

“It’s the age-old thing of doing well but not getting the result. But we need to get some results. There is no reason why we cannot win the next game and then go on to three or four.

“We know the next game is a big one but we have enough to be concerned about with ourselves rather than look at other teams round about us.”

Meanwhile, Albion Rovers boss Darren Young was lamenting the loss of an injury-time goal that gave 10-man Airdrie bragging rights in a seven-goal thriller in the Monklands derby.

A last-gasp winner from Sean McIntosh gave the Diamonds, who had Kyle Hutton sent off late on, all three points to leave Rovers anchored in relegation trouble at the foot on League One.

Young said: “It was a sickening way to lose any game never mind a local derby.”
