Traffic cone assault on woman lands man in jail

- By COURT REPORTER

AN ENRAGED man battered a woman with a traffic cone in a heated row over playground bullying.

Scott Lawlar, of Park Gate in Erskine, also spat on the female victim and hit her on the head during the “cowardly attack” on February 26, 2016.

The 29-year-old travelled more than 10 miles from his home to Craigton Road with the intention of “having a word” with the woman.

However, the situation escalated when he confronted her about bullying incidents at a school.

The victim, who had been visiting local shops at the time, was assaulted by Lawlar around 4.30pm.

He then spat on her face, forcing her to push him away.

Lawlar however did not relent and continued to pursue the woman, slapping her on the head.

After his attack he returned to his car, which his victim then started kicking.

Again, Lawlar and a pal got out of the vehicle and went after the woman, grabbing a traffic cone which he then used to attack her.

Irate Lawlar threw the cone at his victim, hitting her on the back, before he kicked her in the back and fled the scene.

The injured woman contacted emergency services and police chased after the thug before arresting him.

When in custody, Lawlar admitted the whole incident.

The Erskine man appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman by spitting her, slapping her on the head and following her.

He also admitted to throwing a traffic cone at her, hitting her on the body with the cone and kicking her during the prolonged incident.

Lawlar’s solicitor told the court that the dispute had resulted in his client and the woman “acting like children themselves.”

He added that the female victim had been at the home of Lawlar’s partner to discuss claims of school bullying before the assault happened. Lawlar then drove from Erskine to “have a word” with the woman. The Sheriff told Lawler that there was no alternative to custody for his “cowardly attack” and he was jailed for six months.
