Driver avoids prison after mayhem journey

-

A MAN who drove dangerously in Glasgow’s East End has avoided jail.

Steven McCormick, 30, appeared in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing after admitting to the offence.

He pleaded guilty and accepted that he did drive dangerously. The incident happened on several roads including Brookfield Road, Auchinairn Gate and Hillhead Road on March 28, last year.

During the course of his journey his car crossed the carriageway at Brookfield Road, mounted the pavement and struck a car which was parked and stationary. The charge sheet states it also struck stairs on the road.

McCormick, of Leglen Wood Drive, Robroyston, also plead guilty to not providing two specimens of breath at London Road Police Station.

The procurator fiscal depute told the court that McCormick had been at the home of his exgirlfriend when he got into his black BMW apparently under the influence of alcohol.

When the car eventually came to a stop at a grass embankment, the airbags were deployed and McCormick was seen by a witness slumped for some moments. He left the car and when asked if he was OK, he replied: “I am fine”.

When officers caught up with him, he said: “Aye, I drove drunk.”

He will complete 200 hours of unpaid work and has been banned from driving for three years.

He was also fined £450.
