Rod to headline Lions event

-

SIR Rod Stewart is to headline a special concert marking the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup triumph.

The Bay City Rollers and Eddi Reader will also perform at the Hydro on May 25, exactly 50 years to the day when the Lisbon Lions became the first British team to lift the trophy.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who won the European Cup twice as manager of Manchester United, will speak about his memories of the team.

Celtic said there will also be other “special guests” from the world of football, music and entertainment.

The surviving players from the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in 1967 will take part in a series of events in May, including a civic reception at Glasgow City Chambers and a tribute lunch.

Net proceeds from the event will go to the Celtic Foundation to support its charity work.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “We are delighted to be able to announce an event which we believe will be a fitting tribute to the wonderful achievements of the Lisbon Lions, and who better to add tribute than our beloved Sir Rod as we mark the 50th anniversary of the greatest victory of all.

“Our triumph in Lisbon is something every Celtic supporter will always be proud of and in becoming the first British team to win the European Cup, the Lions have laid down an amazing legacy which will resonate forever with generations to come.

“I have had the real privi- lege of meeting every member of this great team, men of such stature who represented Celtic with such grace, humility and dignity.

“We will honour all of the Lions, including those great men we have sadly lost.”

Speaking on behalf of the Lisbon Lions, Jim Craig said: “It is very humbling to be honoured in this way and I am sure this will be an emotional but fun evening with team-mates, friends, families and the best supporters of all.”
