Officer head-butted outside city centre pub

A MAN was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after he assaulted a police officer outside a city centre pub.

Mark McSorley was restrained by members of the public before the police arrived on the scene outside the Sir John Moore on Argyle Street.

The court heard the 44-year-old was acting in a strange manner and police were contacted.

There had been a suggestion that that there was a knife involved in the incident but there was nothing to substantiate that claim.

Members of the public had held him down before the police arrived where his hands where then strapped.

It was then that he head-butted one of the officers. However the officer was not injured as a result of the attack.

McSorley admitted that on August 22, last year, at the Sir John Moore on Argyle Street he behaved in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting, swearing and uttering threats.

He also admitted that in Argyle Street he assaulted a police officer by lunging towards him and headbutting him.

A period of 12 months of supervision was imposed on McSorley.

The sentencing sheriff McCrory said: “I’m not sure your health is in a place that would allow you to engage with unpaid work.

“I don’t want to set you up to fail.”
