Scots eye up Arthur for National success

-

ONE FOR ARTHUR, who caught the eye when a staying-on fifth at Aintree in December, will today seek to become Scotland’s first Grand National hero since Rubstic in 1979.

Derek Fox will be on board again after steering One For Arthur to victory at Warwick last time out.

One For Arthur is trained in Scotland by Lucinda Russell, who is assisted by for- mer champion jockey Peter Scudamore.

Russell said: “He’s got loads and loads of scope. His only problem could be jumping too big, but he should be safe.

“I’m just looking forward to the day, I feel a bit sick talking about it now but he doesn’t know what’s going on.

“When his owners first wanted a horse I asked them if they’d rather win the Gold Cup or National.

“They all said, ‘National’, and it’s also a race I’ve always wanted to win.”

Meanwhile, a man has cashed in a Grand National-winning bet 43 years late after finding the slip while clearing a house.

Bob Holmes discovered it while helping sort through his late father-in-law’s paperwork.

The £1 win-only bet backed Red Rum in the 1974 Grand National, which the famous racehorse won. It is thought to be a record for the oldest bet ever cashed in.

Mr Holmes, 76, from Houston, Renfrewshire, contacted bookmaker William Hill and it confirmed the slip, placed at odds of 11-1, had never been cashed.
