A MAN died in hospital after a horrific incident with knives in Glasgow city centre.

Police said an assault took place in St Vincent Street shortly after 4pm yesterday and the suspect then headed to West Nile Street where he “inflicted serious injuries upon himself”.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man, who had an axe under his arm, injuring himself in the neck with two Stanley knives.

The man died in the Royal Infirmary a short time later.

Police described the incident as “contained and isolated.” No one else is wanted in connection with it.

The man is believed to have turned two blades on himself while onlookers watched in horror.

Police were called to West Nile Street where they found the man close to a number of popular restaurants and bars.

The area was completely closed off for hours while investigations took place, and the man was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Eye witnesses who saw the disturbing incident said “there was a lot of blood” and reported seeing police officers spray a substance in to the man’s face. He was then restrained. One onlooker said he was also carrying an axe, which was put into a black bag by police.

An hour later, investigators could be seen cutting in to a drain to retrieve what looked like a mobile phone.

One eye witness said he saw the man injuring him- self in the neck with two Stanley knives as he was looking in to the window of a building.

He said: “He had an axe on him. It was under his arm while he was holding the blades.

“The guy then walked away up West Nile Street.

“I walked after him and that’s when a police van pulled up.”

The eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said officers sprayed gas in to the man’s eyes and restrained him.

The two blades came away from his hands and landed near a lamppost.

Another onlooker said: “He was running up the street and was being very threatening.

“It was a pretty traumatic experience for a lot of people.”

Forensic officers could be seen on West Nile Street, close to St Vincent Street, hours after the incident collecting what appeared to be a knife in an evidence bag.

People in nearby restaurants and bars said they were told to stay inside the venues while investigations were carried out.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said a man in his 40s has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the incident.
