A QUIET PASSION (12A)

The film follows young Emily Dickinson (Emma Bell) from her time at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary to her later years (now played by Cynthia Nixon), when she writes her poetry late at night with the blessing of her pious father, Edward (Keith Carradine). A Quiet Passion is a dense and exceedingly wordy tribute to a trailblazer at odds with the prevailing moods of the era.

THE BOSS BABY (U)

Every night, seven-year-old Tim Templeton (voiced by Miles Christopher Bakshi) enjoys three bedtime stories, five hugs and a special song from his parents Ted (Jimmy Kimmel) and Janice (Lisa Kudrow), who make time for their boy despite demanding jobs for Puppy Co. This bond is severely tested with the arrival of a brother called Boss Baby (Baldwin),. The Boss Baby ties itself in knots blurring fantasy and reality.

GOING IN STYLE (12A)

Three elderly men hatch a hare-brained scheme to rob a bank in director Zach Braff’s remake of the 1979 comedy of the same title, based on a script by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures). Willie (Morgan Freeman), Joe (Michael Caine) and Albert (Alan Arkin) are lifelong friends, who all worked for the same steel company and are now mellowing in retirement. The trio’s former employer announces it is freezing all pension payments. Enraged by this injustice, Willie, Joe and Albert decide to rob the Williamsburg Savings Bank, which manages the pension fund.

GHOST IN THE SHELL (12A)

Based on the cult Japanese manga of the same title, Ghost In The Shell is an actionpacked futuristic thriller set in a world where an elusive hacker is wreaking havoc by leaping into the minds of unsuspecting strangers.

FAST & FURIOUS 8 (12A)

The lastest installment screeches around Cuba, Germany, America and Russia to deliver jaw-dropping set pieces on land and splintering ice. F Gary Gray’s film passes its MOT with flying colours. However, as a coherent narrative full of believable characters and sinewy subplots, the eighth film is a clapped-out banger.

THE SENSE OF AN ENDING (15)

The Sense Of An Ending is constructed on the solid foundation of Julian Barnes’ novel. The impetuosity of hormone-addled youth in flashbacks contrasts with the weary resignation of retirement, laced with gentle humour.
