Mall delivers jobs boost as new arrivals unveiled

- By HOLLY LENNON

MORE than 100 new jobs will be up for grabs at the Glasgow Fort after it was announced that eight new stores will be opening in the centre throughout the year.

A range of restaurants and shops will be joining the existing 90 outlets.

It is estimated that the new additions will create more than 150 jobs for the local area.

YO! Sushi, Pret a Manger, Thaikun and Cafe Rouge will be adding to the current selection of restaurants in the leisure and shopping centre, including Gourmet Burger Kitchen, which opened last year, creating 39 jobs.

Clothing outlets Superdry, Tessuti and stationery stores Paperchase and Smiggle will also be joining the line-up.

As well as the new additions, Mamas & Papas, Nandos, Costa and JD Sports will be upsizing their existing stores.

Phil Goodman, centre director at Glasgow Fort, said: “This is a very exciting time at Glasgow Fort and we are delighted to be building upon our already strong retail and leisure offering for our customers.

“We are confident these new brands will be very welcome additions for fashion, food and fun fans.

“We look forward to announcing more details on each of the stores in the coming months.”

Mamas & Papas, Smiggle and Superdry will be opening their doors on April 27, 28 and 29.

The Glasgow Fort has seen a whole host of retailers joining the centre in recent years.

In 2016, Scotland’s first KIKO Milano beauty store opened its doors in the Fort along with luggage retailer Antler, jeweller Pandora, Waterstones and Italian restaurant Tony Macaroni.

Sports retailer Footasylum also joined the fold in July, last year, giving the area another jobs boost.

Around 30 positions were created by the streetwear and sportswear store.

Foot fall in the shopping centre has increased by five per cent in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the same period last year.

Around 14.5 million people visited the mall in 2016.

The figure is likely to increase for 2017 with the opening of new stores.
