Darmian backs Rashford for world supremacy

- By DAVID BARCLAY

MATTEO DARMIAN insists Marcus Rashford’s display against tabletopping Chelsea proved the Manchester United striker is destined to become one of the world’s best players.

Rashford was in top form in Sunday’s 2-0 Old Trafford victory over the English Premier League leaders, who failed to muster a single shot on target. Ander Herrera added the second goal and provided the first, which Rashford finished smartly after being put through for his ninth goal of the campaign and Darmian backed the 19-yearold, who has struggled at times this season, for world supremacy.

The Italy full-back said: “Marcus is a great player. He is still very young but he is very important for us. With his quality, he can be a top playes, one of the most important players, in the world.

“I think he is very good in every part of the game, he has a very good shot, movement, speed.

“Sometimes for a striker, it is a normal to go through periods of not scoring but I hope he continues like this, like Sunday, because it helps the team to reach its objective.”

United are trying to secure a top-four finish and win the Europa League but the manner of victory against Chelsea was a timely shot in the arm.

Darmian said: “We know our characteristics. Sometimes, of course, we draw a lot of games at home. This kind of game gives us confidence.

“Everyone is concentrated as we play for two big opportunities.

“One is the Europa League and the second is to finish in the top four because I think playing in the Champions League is a very good objective for next season.”

Darmian, linked with a summer exit, says United cannot waver with the Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Anderlecht on Thursday after last week’s 1-1 draw in Belgium.

He said: “We know that it will be a difficult game but we play at home, in front of our fans.”
