Gaffer in market as he waits on Stuart

- By JOHN McGILL

CELTIC manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful midfielder Stuart Armstrong will commit his future to the club but is also targeting highquality reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old has been one of the standout performers for the Northern Irishman’s side this season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions to help the Hoops in their bid to secure the Treble.

Armstrong has a deal running until 2018 but Rodgers says the club are working towards an extension.

He also revealed that the Parkhead side want to bring in some quality additions to improve their chances of Champions League success in the 2017/18 campaign.

Speaking to Talksport, Rodgers said: “A lot of the boys are tied into the club for the next three to five years – young Kieran signed a five-year deal last summer, Tom Rogic, and Stuart Armstrong is the one we’re with at the moment, so we’re hoping he’ll sign another deal.

“So that leaves a real good core of the team together and we don’t need many.

“But if we can bring in a couple of players of quality just to help, that would be progress.”

Celtic were dealt a blow when Moussa Dembele limped off during the first half with a muscle injury.

Despite concerns the French striker could be sidelined for the rest of the season, Rodgers believes he could still play a part in the Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen on May 27.

“He gets his scan today so we’ll see the extent of it,” he said. “We’ve still got five weeks till the final so there’s still a good possibility he could make it.”
