Richie: Ashfield faithful as vocal as footie fans

- By PETER WEST

RICHIE Worrall says Glasgow’s derby atmosphere can be as good as a Premier League football game.

The stylish speedster and his six team-mates face Edinburgh tomorrow night in a top-of-the-table SGB Championship clash – with what could be the country’s biggest crowd of the weekend.

Worrall got his first taste of the Scottish ding-dong last season, most memorably when the sides met live on Sky Sports.

The Peugeot Ashfield Stadium was likened to the British Grand Prix at Cardiff that night for the noise fans created – and the Englishman says the fixture has an atmosphere like nowhere else.

He said: “When I took part in the derby it opened my eyes. I thought, ‘What’s going on here?’ I’ve been in a Plymouth and Somerset derby but they had people asleep i n the stands – there wasn’t much going on!

“When the Facennas gave out all the air horns on the Sky match last year, that was something else – there was plenty of noise. That gets you going.”

Edinburgh are the league’s in-form side, topping the table on 16 points – but Glasgow can catch them up if they win tomorrow’s meeting.

Worrall knows the Tigers will have to be raring to go if they want to take all three points.

“Edinburgh are going well at the top of the league,” Worrall said.

“They went to Scunthorpe and won, and did a better job than we did there. To be fair, though, a couple of Scunthorpe’s top guys had shockers – they went a lot better against us.

“So maybe they were having an off-night and that’s what gave Edinburgh the win. But they are strong. We’re all going to have to be performing

The meeting gets under way at 7pm.
