-

TALKS were held between the council and a city campaign group after demands were made to protect the lives of homeless people in Glasgow.

On the day of the first full council meeting, Living Rent Glasgow launched a protest outside the City Chambers proclaiming the messages ‘Homelessness Shames Glasgow’ and ‘No More Homeless Deaths – Time For Action’.

With a presence outside the front and rear entrances of the building the group of around 30 where invited in to the chambers to talk over the group’s demands.

A discussion was then held between the group and members of the SNP minority administration.

The commitment drafted by the group includes ring fencing the homelessness service budget and increased support and funding through consultation with service providers and users. Further talks have now been organised.

Sean Baillie, a Living Rent campaign organiser said: “It’s the first steps of progress in what we’re trying to achieve.Homelessness is a massive issue in Scotland and the council needs to take action now.”

A spokesman for the council said: “Councillors met with the group yesterday and it was agreed there would be further talks. Tackling street homelessness is an absolute priority for the new City Government.

“We will be hosting a summit on homelessness as part of the city government’s first 100 days in office.”
