Bogus cops steal cars from Gumtree sellers

THIEVES claiming to be plainclothed police officers have been stealing cars that are being sold on Gumtree.

Officers have warned members of the public to be on their guard after a number of incidents involving two men claiming to be police officers in Glasgow and other parts of central Scotland.

Members of the public who are attempting to sell cars on Gumtree are being contacted by interested buyers who then arrange to meet them.

When the meeting takes place, two men claiming to be plainclothed police officers arrive and steal the car.

Police have received reports of the same thing happening in the Glasgow area twice this week.

The first occurred on Wednesday at around 8.40pm at Glasgow Central Mosque in the Gorbals area.

A second incident in the Glasgow area on Thursday, which is believed to be linked, is currently under investigation.

The first man is described as mid to late 20s, 5ft8 ins, medium to stocky build, with a pale complexion and short dark brown hair. He was last seen wearing G Star jeans and a dark waterproof jacket.

The second man is described as around 6ft, of slim build, with a pale complexion and short red hair.

He was last seen wearing black Nike trousers.

Both men were in possession of police equipment including handcuffs and covert harnesses.

Detective Sergeant Mike Leyton from Cathcart CID said: “Please be on your guard and ensure any interested buyers are genuine before arranging to meet anyone.”
