Thug bit two men after brawl broke out in pub
Crime Reporter A MAN bit two men after kicking off in a city centre boozer, a court has heard.
Jamie Smith, 28, appeared in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to several offences during the pub rammy.
The Procurator Fiscal depute told the court that Smith was in The Merchant on West George Street at around 8.35pm on June 5, last year.
He was being served by staff in the bar area but was told he had had too much to drink. Smith then became aggressive towards the staff, and he admitted that he threw a glass at them causing it to smash.
The court heard that the glass smashed behind the bar, narrowly missing staff.
He was removed from the pub and returned around 45 minutes later when he assaulted two men.
He pleaded guilty to assaulting them and admitted that he did bite both of the men on the body to their injury.
Smith had sustained an injury himself during the scuffle and when police caught up with him, they took him to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he kicked off again at around 10.20pm.
At the hospital, he admitted assaulting two police officers. He struck one male officer on the head and repeatedly attempted to bite him on the body all to his injury.
He punched another male officer on the head, kicked him on the body and repeatedly attempted to bite him all to his injury.
Smith’s defence agent told the court his client recognised that the offences are serious. He added that Smith had too much to drink and he had taken some Valium on top of his own medication.
The court also heard that Smith, of Bank Street, Coatbridge, was unemployed and there was an element of self pity in him drinking to excess. His friends were returning to work after the festive period and he was out of work.
His defence agent also said Smith had underlying difficulties with alcohol and Valium.
Smith was placed under supervision for 18 months as an alternative to custody.
