Blueprint coming together for Pedro

PEDRO CAIXINHA believes he has found the style of football which will take Rangers forward next season.

His team played more of a possession game than they had previously in their win away to St Johnstone on Sunday, the final match of the season, and with as young a team that has been fielded by the club in years.

The Portuguese will over the next few days confirm who is set to leave Ibrox in what is certain to be a busy summer and, while who will join remains to be seen, the Gers boss at least has a firm thought about how his team will set out from now on.

Caixinha said: “I have learned that the style of play we played on Sunday is the style we need to adopt to play against these teams.

“St Johnstone have had a fantastic season and are only just behind us. They have had fantastic results throughout the season and if you take the initiative in the game they feel they are not playing their style and they are playing a style which is difficult for them.

“We were capable of doing it, which meant we didn’t have to fight for so many second balls. We retained more of the ball and controlled more of the game. I am glad we have found the solution to face these teams.”

Jak Alnwick got his first Rangers start in goal at McDiarmid Park and the keeper hopes to play a bigger role next season.

Wes Foderinham has been one of the more consistent performers, which means he could be one of those who move on if the right bid comes in.

And if that were to occur, Alnwick is determined to stake his place.

He said: “It was nice to get out in front of the manager, you have to show what you can do and in training you can only show so much and without playing minutes you can’t show what you can do.

“Hopefully I have put a little marker in his head. You have to do what you can and you have to keep pushing every single day and see where it takes you. It is going to be a good competition between Wes and me.”
