Film buffs’ fury after rain hits outdoor screenings

- By HOLLY LENNON

PLANS for an outdoor cinema in Glasgow’s West End have been dampened by the weather.

Hundreds of people bought tickets for the the Bandstand Cinema Club (BCC) at the Kelvingrove Bandstand, which is taking place this week.

Organisers were forced to pull the plug on the event yesterday due to concerns over heavy rain.

The first BCC screening on Monday was forced to be rescheduled due to changes in weather conditions and a request to end the event before 11pm.

Ticketholders took to social media to voice their disappointment as many were left unable to attend, while those who made it said films failed to start at the advertised time, leaving them to brave the elements for a further hour and a half.

Tuesday night’s showing of the Big Lebowski and Braveheart also fell victim to changeable Scottish weather.

Organisers had hoped to go ahead with the showing but were eventually forced to cancel after a venue safety officer deemed the bandstand unsuitable after heavy rainfall throughout the day.

Laura McAnon, who purchased tickets weeks in advance, said: “Changes were on certain websites weeks ago without explanation and without confirmation.

“As a ticket holder I was not informed.

“No information was made available about refunds and no reply was made to any of my e-mails, messages or posts.

“A generic message does not solve anything and it still points to awful organisation.

“No other bandstand event has had such issues and miscommunication.

“Changing back times at the last minute is also not a solution.

“There seems to be no effort made to refund anyone. Very poor.”

A spokesman for the Bandstand Cinema Club said: “Although we were confident throughout the day that BCC could take place, the weather forecast for Tuesday deteriorated significantly. This decision was not taken lightly, however public safety concerns is most important factor in coming to this conclusion.

“Existing ticketholders will be able to use their ticket for either show on Wednesday and Thursday as the weather conditions are forecast to be much better.”

The Kelvingrove Bandstand is a popular venue during the summer months and is due to host the West End Fiesta from Friday until Sunday.

Acts including Kool & the Gang, Nile Rogers and Jocelyn Brown will be taking to the stage for the three-day event.

Screenings of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting are set to go ahead this evening.
