Knife thugs bottle shop worker after booze bid

- By HANNAH RODGER

A BRAVE shop worker who chased down knife-wielding thieves has spoken of his horror after they turned on him.

John Allan, 48, was battered over the head by thugs who robbed Tommy’s Off-Sales and Falak Convenience Store on Allison Street on Monday night.

The pair came in to the shop around 9pm and snatched bottles of booze, before making off down the street.

Courageous employee John, who has worked in the shop for around 19 years, ran after them.

He explained: “I didn’t think about the danger, I just ran after them instinctively but I didn’t expect them to try and threaten me with a knife.”

The thieves had grabbed two crates of beer on their way out of the shop, but dropped them in the panic after John started chasing them.

They then turned on John and hit him over the head with one of the broken bottles, leaving a gash in the back of his head.

John said: “They started attacking me.

“They swung out with the bottle and it hit me.

“When they swung the bottle it hit me over the head but I just thought it would smash.

“I felt all the wetness on my back, but I just thought it was the beer.

“I put my hand up and I saw all the blood on my head.”

Police and ambulance crews rushed to Allison Street and John was treated, getting six stitches in his head to seal up the wound.

Shop boss Khawaja Nadeem also witnessed the brutal attack.

He said: “They just came in out of nowhere, I couldn’t believe it.

“They just came in and took some stuff, bottles of Budweiser, two crates, then my worker started chasing them and they dropped them, and they had a knife.”

Police have appealed for any- one who has information about the incident to contact them on 101.

A spokeswoman said: “Around 9.10pm on Monday, June 5, police were called to a report of an incident at Falak Convenience Store in Allison Street.

“Two men entered the shop and stole a number of items before assaulting the 48-year-old male shopkeeper.

“Inquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Cathcart Police Station via 101 and quote incident number 4089 of Monday 5 June 2017.”
