Airport celebrates busiest May on record
ALMOST one million passengers visited Glasgow airport last month, smashing previous records.
Airport bosses are celebrating the busiest May on record after 910,000 people passed through the travel hub.
The latest figures represent a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.
In addition, the travel hub is set to break more records with a seven per cent increase on annual figures.
Between June, last year and May this year, more than nine million people used the airport.
The success has been attributed to additional capacity from a number of airlines including Thomson and Thomas Cook.
Celtic fans travelling to Portugal to celebrate the Lisbon Lions anniversary are also said to have boosted numbers, mainly travelling on Ryanair’s newly-launched Lisbon route.
International routes have seen a surge of 16.5 per cent, while internal UK routes have also risen by two per cent.
May also saw the airport’s long-haul services up by 15 per cent thanks to an increase in demand for North American flights including Florida and Emirates’ double daily service to Dubai.
Domestic travel was also helped by easyJet’s Bristol services and Loganair’s Highland and Island routes, contributing to the overall boost in numbers.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “May was an extremely successful month which saw the launch of Delta Air Line’s inaugural New York-JFK route and new service to Bergen and the Isle of Man.”
