Sullivan: Tony can work his magic on Rocks

- SPORTSWIDE

GREAT Britain legend Drew Sullivan has backed Tony Garbelotto to bring silverware to Glasgow Rocks.

The Englishman is set to be unveiled today as the new head coach at the Emirates Arena with a licence to build a team that can end the club’s 14-year wait for a major trophy.

Sullivan, who retired last month after a stellar career that saw him become the first British male to earn 100 caps, saw Garbelotto at work up close as part of the Mersey Tigers team that landed the domestic treble in 2011.

And he expects his arrival will instantly elevate the Rocks alongside Leicester and Newcastle as contenders for the British Basketball League title.

“I think it’s great for the BBL that Tony is back over here working,” Sullivan said. “Tony is a born winner who demands a high level of professionalism, attention to detail and work ethic from the players that he works with. I can honestly say that Tony wouldn’t have signed to coach Glasgow if he didn’t think he could help the club improve.”

The chair of the much-delayed review into claims of bullying and discrimination within the Great Britain cycling team has denied the report has been toned down.

Written by a five-strong panel led by British Rowing chair Annamarie Phelps, the report was commissioned 14 months ago following allegations made by ex-GB track sprinter Jess Varnish and several other former riders.

The report, published yesterday, has strongly criticised British Cycling’s board, former technical director Shane Sutton and funding agency UK Sport.

However, the report’s language, and some of its conclusions, are significantly diluted from a more damning draft that was written at the end of February.

That draft, leaked i n March, accused the British Cycling board of being “dysfunctional”, “inept” and effectively covering up an internal investigation into Varnish’s claims last year.

David Haye has been fined £25,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for his conduct in the build-up to his defeat by Tony Bellew. The heavyweight repeatedly made severe threats against Bellew’s life prior to their March 4 fight at London’s O2 Arena.
