Expectant mums are sent away from hospital

-

EXPECTANT mothers were diverted from Glasgow’s super hospital as it struggled to deal with a high number of patients.

Three women had to be admitted to other maternity hospitals in the area yesterday after the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital was unable to take them.

A number of planned procedures also had to be deferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Princess Royal Maternity due to lack of resources.

One woman was sent home just 40-hours after having an emergency caesarian section.

Mark Gorman was left fearing for his girlfriend’s life after the quick discharge.

He said: “She’s still in pain. The hospital said they’re packed to the brim and turning people away to different hospitals. My daughter was delivered by caesar- ean section five-weeks early as she was distressed so she will be kept in for a week or two.”

A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “A temporary divert was put in place this afternoon at the maternity unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital affecting a very small number of women, however the hospital remains open and births are continuing.

“We have an arrangement to use our three related maternity units to manage peaks in demand across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The divert was put in place due to a high number of admissions to the QEUH and a number of women and babies with additional needs.

“No women have been turned away. Patient safety was maintained at all times. We would like to apologise to anyone to whom this caused any inconvenience.”
