Skipper: Tony will be a Rock at Glasgow

- SPORTSWIDE

GLASGOW Rocks captain Kieron Achara believes new coach Tony Garbelotto can take the BBL club to a whole new level and boost their trophy hopes.

The Great Britain forward was involved in the Rocks’ unorthodox recruitment process as part of a three-man panel who interviewed the main candidates.

But with Garbelotto emerging ahead of a shortlist that also included former Cheshire Phoenix playcaller John Coffino, Achara now expects the Englishman to give him a real opportunity to finally bring silverware to the Emirates Arena.

“Tony brings a wealth of experience and knows what it takes to win in this league,” he said.

“That is an invaluable asset. “I know Tony from our early GB days when he was providing us with in-depth scouting reports of our opponents.

“Tony and I both care deeply about developing young British talent and wanting to win the rights way so I’m excited at having his leadership at the Rocks and getting to learn from him.”

Mark Cavendish wants to go in search of the so-far elusive Olympic gold medal in the Madison at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The 32-year-old has won 30 stages of the Tour de France, was the 2011 road world champion and is a three-times world champion in the Madison.

He twice finished Olympics disappointed before claiming silver in the then six-discipline omnium at last August’s Games in Rio, after combining track and road commitments in 2016.

Now, following the re-introduction of the two-rider Madison to the Olympic programme, Cavendish could go for gold. He won the 2005 world title with Rob Hayles and the 2008 and 2016 titles with Sir Bradley Wiggins.

“The Madison is my favourite track event and I’d love to represent Team GB in Tokyo 2020,” said Cavendish.

“It’s still a long way off but just its inclusion is great for our sport.”
