Crime Reporter A MAN was today waking up to life behind bars after being jailed for killing a pensioner in Pollokshields.

Imrick Joni, 21, stabbed and strangled Gordon Bolam, 68, at the pensioner’s home in Kenmure Street sometime between June 29 and July 14, last year.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday.

Joni will service a minimum of 13 years in prison for the murder after he was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The court previously heard that after carrying out the murder Joni hid Mr Bolam’s body in a wardrobe having tried to conceal it under a number of items of clothing and bags.

Mr Joni then attempted to clean up any traces of his crime. He washed the upholstery of the chair on which Mr Bolam had been assaulted, mopped the floors and cleaned other surfaces of the Kenmure Street flat and later disposed of his own clothing and the murder weapon.

As a result of a meticulous forensic examination at the scene, DNA evidence was recovered that showed Joni was not only present but had carried out the murder. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Mr Joni was detained after Police Scotland attended a break-in at the Festival Theatre and he was discovered inside. CCTV footage showed him trying to open cash tills and stealing various items.

Following the sentencing hearing, Nicky Patrick, Procurator Fiscal for Homicide & Major Crime, said: “This was a prosecution that was made possible after outstanding work in the field of forensic science.

“Only after a painstaking, thorough and demanding effort in this field was Joni identified as being responsible for this crime.

“Justice has been served with him being brought to account for his crime and he now faces a very substantial prison sentence.”
