Shoplifting spree leads to assault of store staff

-

A MAN was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after stealing more than £100 worth of alcohol and assaulting shop staff.

Aaron McGurk stole £165 worth of drink, none of which was recovered, between March 26 and March 31.

After this spree of shoplifting, the court heard the 18-year-old was in an Asda store at 4am walking towards staff at the checkouts. He was then asked to leave as he had been barred.

One of the shop’s security staff then grabbed the accused by the arms where McGurk said to people there: “I’m going to kill you – acting the big man. Who the f*** do you think you are?”

McGurk then punched one of the staff members in the face.

He was taken to the ground and kept struggling as police officers arrived. He was then asked to calm down but instead he squared up to another witness and headbutted him on the face.

McGurk admitted in separate charges that on March 26, on two occasions, and March 31 at the Asda i n Monument Drive, Robroyston, he stole a quantity of alcoholic drinks.

He further admitted that in April at the Asda on Monument Drive, he behaved in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting, swearing, behaving in an aggressive manner and uttering threats to members of staff there. He went on to admit that on April 1 at Asda, he assaulted a staff member by punching him on the head.

McGurk’s solicitor said he was one of a group who went regular runs to the store to steal alcohol and escaped through the fire door.

He also admitted headbutting another staff member at Asda in April. He was also sentenced for having £20 worth of heroin and £10 worth of cannabis on him.

McGurk, of Greenside Crescent, admitted that on June 18, last year, on Robroyston Road he had heroin in his possession.

He further admitted that on the same date at the same place he had cannabis in his possession.

The sentencing sheriff imposed a community payback order where McGurk was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for 18 months.
