I’m happy to lean on Las, says Carl
NEW Motherwell captain Carl McHugh insists he will pick the brains of his legendary predecessor Keith Lasley as he vowed to embrace the pressure of leading the Steelmen.
Lasley, who made close to 500 appearances for the Fir Park outfit over two spells, announced his retirement last week after agreeing to become Stephen Robinson’s assistant manager.
Despite only arriving last summer, 24-year-old McHugh was selected to take the armband and has been humbled by the reaction of his team-mates and supporters alike.
While he intends to put his own stamp on the role, McHugh is adamant he will not shy away from gaining advice from Lasley, Motherwell stalwart Steven Hammell and former Celtic skipper Stephen McManus.
“All the boys have been brilliant and I’ve had a lot of messages from supporters on Twitter as well, which means a lot to me,” said McHugh. “I’m going to put everything into it.
“I’m very lucky and am in a privileged position to take over from Las [Lasley] and thankfully he is still here for me to tap into his experience.
“You’ve also got Hammy [Hammell] and Mick [McManus], with the great careers that they have had. That will be a massive help for me.
“The captaincy hasn’t changed my role too much yet – it’s a bit more admin!
“I’m looking after the fines and things like that now. I’m helping the new lads settle in and the atmosphere has been really positive.”
