Gorbals fitness centre setfor£1.5mmakeover

- By CATRIONA STEWART

GLASGOW Club Gorbals is to close for six months as it is given a £1.5million makeover.

Improvement works are to begin on Monday, July 31 and will see major renovations to all areas of the facility.

Gym-goers will benefit from a new modern health suite, creation of new multi-purpose health and fitness spaces, installation of new self-serve access gates, and a refurbishment to the venue’s gym and changing areas.

Billy Garrett, Glasgow Life’s Director of Sport and Events, said: “These renovations will see major improvements to Glasgow Club Gorbals, ensuring it continues to serve the local community for years to come.

“We’ve listened to member feedback and have taken this into consideration in our plans to refurbish the centre.

“We know our customers want more fitness classes to be timetabled and the creation of two new studio spaces will enable us to do so.

“Similarly, the installation of self-serve access gates will reduce the need to queue at reception, meaning customers have more time to spend keeping fit.”

Some areas of the facility will close to the public on July 31 in order to allow works to go ahead.

These include the gym and changing areas, sports hall, spin studio and leisure pool.

Fitness classes will continue to be delivered at the centre on a reduced basis.

The venue is scheduled to reopen in January, next year.

Mr Garrett added: “We understand the resulting closures will have an impact on Glasgow Club Gorbals users and we’ve worked hard to ensure the renovations are carried out as quickly as possible.

“Glasgow Club members can use any of our other facilities across the city while the work is being carried out in Gorbals and our staff will be more than happy to help customers with any queries regarding the improvements.”

Among other improvements, in the gym, a wall will be constructed to separate the new gym and sports hall with new entrance doors, windows, ceiling and lighting installed.

The gym changing rooms and toilets will be completely refurbished, including the installation of new private changing and shower spaces.

A new health suite will be created on the ground floor in the existing café area, accessed from the pool side.

Glasgow Life is urging all customers who use Glasgow Club Gorbals to see myglasgow.club/gorbals for more information about how the planned closures will affect them.
