Testimonial game for skipper Scott

- By JOHN McGILL

SCOTT BROWN is to be rewarded with a lucrative testimonial match to mark his 10 years at Celtic.

The news came last night after the Parkhead club confirmed they have kick-started the process of organising the game.

Brown joined Celtic in 2007 under Gordon Strachan from Hibs for £4.4m and has won seven league titles, three Scottish Cups and three League Cups with the Hoops.

Last season he played a key part in steering Celtic to only the fourth domestic Treble in the club’s history.

Last weekend manager Brendan Rodgers hailed Brown as one of Celtic’s greatest-ever captains.

The two man have forged a key partnership at the heart of the team that stayed invincible on its way to a historic clean sweep in Scotland.

And on Friday Rodgers admitted his skipper deserved a testimonial.

The Parkhead boss said: Rodgers said: “Scott’s someone I want here while I’m here. He’s a remarkable player who will go down as one of the greatest captains in the club’s history.

“He’s done it over the course of 10 years here but what he did last season puts him alongside the greatest captains.”

Last night Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell also joined in the chorus of praise for the Scotland internationalist.

He said: “Scott has served Celtic brilliantly over the past decade. He has given everything to the club and has played such an important role in bringing us success after success.

“He has also been a fantastic Celtic captain, doing so much for the club on and off the park in this role.

“Scott has always been a winner and it is fitting that he celebrates 10 great years at Celtic in such style as an Invincible and by lifting the Treble. We are delighted to grant this request from the Testimonial Committee.”
