- By STACEY MULLEN Crime Reporter

A MAN crept up on a young woman from behind and assaulted her during a midnight attack.

The terrified woman, 28, was pounced on as she was crossing Cambuslang Road at its junction with Farmeloan Road and Dalmarnock Road in Rutherglen.

The attack happened at around midnight on Monday.

Passers-by then jumped to her aid as the attacker made his escape.

The woman did not need to go to hospital, but has been left badly shaken by the incident.

She made her way home where she then contacted police.

The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 and 30 with a slim build and dark short hair.

Cops say they have discovered that two cyclists and two men were walking in the area and came to the woman’s aid, causing the suspect to flee up Cambuslang Road.

A number 18 bus travelling from Glasgow city centre towards East Kilbride was also in the area around the time of the incident.

Officers are appealing for the four people who assisted the woman to contact them and are appealing for anyone who was on the bus to get in touch as they may have vital information which could assist inquiries.

Detectives continue to review CCTV footage for any additional information on the suspect and the incident.

Detective Constable Blair Carson said: “A young woman has been left extremely upset by this incident and it’s imperative we trace the man responsible.

“I am appealing to anyone who was in that area of Rutherglen around the time of the incident to call us, in particular the people who came to the young woman’s aid.

“Any information could prove significant and lead us to locating the man responsible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at East Kilbride Police Station via 101, quoting reference number 1259 of 11 July 2017.

Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
