Jim: Small clubs quids in thanks to cup reboot
CLYDE manager Jim Chapman has defended the Betfred Cup format – and welcomed the financial trickle down it will give to lower league clubs.
The competition has attracted flak for forcing clubs into competitive matches while in the midst of pre-season preparations.
But Bully Wee boss Chapman insists fixtures against top-flight opposition provides a vital cash boost to smaller sides.
He said: “I think the format’s brilliant, it’s great for low-level clubs.
“It helps to spread much needed financial resources throughout Scottish football and I don’t think anybody should decry it.”
Chapman watched his new look Clyde outfit overcome former club Annan 2-1 at the weekend to take top spot in Group E.
And Broadwood boss Chapman said it was clear the competition retained the edge of regular season fixtures.
He added: “It’s an extension of pre-season but I don’t think there was any player who wasn’t desperate to win.
“It’s real games and I think the fans can see that, the atmosphere at Ayr versus Kilmarnock was brilliant.”
A trip to Rugby Park tonight is next up for Clyde, and Chapman reckons there’s more to come from his team.
He added: “There’s a lot of development in this squad and we’re ready to build from a solid baseline.
“They’ve shown that they have the heart and desire to be successful and that’s a good starting point for me.
“We are now searching for better than what we have in the dressing room, and that’s what development’s about.”
