Fit-again Thommo set for Ton comeback

- By LIAM BRYCE

MORTON boss Jim Duffy expects striker Robert Thomson to return against Queen’s Park tonight after undergoing a medical procedure.

The 24-year-old striker sat out Saturday’s 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers after having a monitor inserted into his chest.

But Duffy confirmed he was confident his new frontman would be available for the visit of the Spiders.

He said: “Robert had a minor medical procedure on Friday, he had a little monitor put into his chest.

“Initially we thought he was going to be OK but his consultant advised that he wasn’t to play and you have to respect that. He should be OK for tonight.”

An own-goal from Berwick’s Oliver Fleming was enough to give Ton victory in their opening Betfred Cup fixture.

And the Cappielow boss told of his satisfac- tion at negotiating a tricky encounter against the League Two outfit.

Duffy said: “It’s a difficult place to come, we weren’t sure what to expect as John Coughlin completely changed his team this summer.

“It was an awkward game for us, but I certainly felt we deserved to win.”

The Greenock men also welcomed back forward Jai Quitongo who made his first start after a long-term injury.

The 19-year-old winger managed 77 minutes on the flank and Duffy was pleased with his and the team’s continued preparations.

He added: “It was good to see Jai start the game after so many months out and he was unlucky once or twice.

“Of course he’s going to be a little rusty but psychologically it was good for him to start.”
