Boyd will battle for his spot at Killie
KRIS BOYD has told boss Lee McCulloch he is ready to take on all comers for his Kilmarnock jersey.
McCulloch gave the veteran striker his backing this week after he made a muted start to the Betfred Cup campaign.
But the Rugby Park manager has admitted he wants to bring in extra attacking recruits to help lighten the load on Boyd, who is the only senior striker currently on Killie’s books.
However, after finally opening his account with both goals in his side’s 2-0 win over Annan, 33-year-old Boyd declared he is ready to fight to keep hold of his starting spot.
Speaking after the victory which keeps Kilmarnock in the hunt for the quarter-finals, the former Rangers frontman said: “There has been a bit of frustration with the way I’ve started the season and the fact I’ve not scored.
“I put that pressure on myself to perform. When you don’t, then you get frustrated.
“The way we played against Ayr in the first group game was disappointing. We were way off it and I had chances against Clyde but couldn’t take them, so it’s good to get the goals at Annan.
“I’ve had people write me off all through my career but I’ve said it all along, that [ability to finish] isn’t going to leave me.
“Yeah I think we’ll be bringing reinforcements in, because I don’t think you can start the season with one striker.
“But it’s up to me to get my fitness up, get ready for the first league match against St Johnstone on August 5 and prepare for the added competition.
“It’s something I’ve faced before and I welcome the challenge.”
