Duffy: McManus can make name for himself at Ton

- By ALAN TEMPLE

MORTON boss Jim Duffy has backed former Celtic kid Connor McManus to rise to the challenge of battling for a starting spot at Cappielow.

The 21-year-old has initially joined the Ton until January and made a quick-fire debut against Motherwell on Saturday, albeit he was powerless to stop the visitors from succumbing to a chastening 4-0 defeat at Fir Park.

McManus, who left the Hoops during the close season after failing to make a senior appearance, has enjoyed loan stints with Alloa and Queen of the South, but is now desperate to cement a firstteam place in Greenock.

And Duffy has no doubt the youngster will thrive at Morton.

He said: “It’s up to him to challenge the established guys there to see whether he can force himself in on a regular basis – and he’s happy to take that challenge on.

“Connor is a talented player who was very well schooled at Celtic. He is 21 years of age and a player I think has a lot to give.

“In terms of his personality and background, everyone is glowing in their reference to him, so I’m sure he’ll fit in very well amongst the boys.”

McManus’ versatility will also be invaluable, according to Duffy, with the youngster able to play in midfield or defence – a useful trait following injuries to Ricki Lamie and Thomas O’Ware.

Duffy added: “Just looking at the squad, I felt we needed a bit more depth to it and a little bit more cover in key areas, and Connor can do that.

“Ricki picked up an injury last midweek and we aren’t sure if it’s going to be a few days or a few weeks. It’s left us short in certain key areas.

“Although Connor is a defensive midfield player, he can play in the defensive area as well.”
