OldFirmneed tomovepast dark old days
your day-to-day life. Some of the comments read on social media in the last few days have been over the top to say the least, while callers to radio phone-ins have been getting their knickers in a twist at the prospect of Rangers (who don’t exist anymore, remember...) not being stripped of titles that were won before they were dead. Make sense?
We are fortunate to live in a society where people are passionate about their football. Particularly in Glasgow and the west, where for many it can be a way of life. But in many cases there should be a health and safety warning attached when it comes to supporting either half of the Old Firm.
TO illustrate my point, at least one person reading that last sentence online will be about to tell me there is no Old Firm...
The upshot of this rant is for Scottish football fans, and particularly those of the big Glasgow clubs, to attempt to focus on the positives in our game rather than constantly pick faults, conjure up conspiracies and in general, just be pure raging with life. As someone who grew up watching Motherwell as a kid, things could be a lot worse. Believe me.
In terms of the title- stripping issue, I fear it’s one that’s never going to go away. In my opinion, far too much time and energy has been wasted on it already. Was a sporting advantage gained? Absolutely. But, in 2017, what impact is it going to have digging it back up again?
The SPFL have stated they have tightened up their rules surrounding player registrations and, in my eyes, have been pretty transparent about their whole approach to the issue over the last few days. It’s something the Scottish Football Association should be made to do as well.
But just one week away from the beginning of a season that offers so much excitement, opportunity and hope, wouldn’t it be nice if the focus could shift to looking to the future rather than staying stuck in the past? Would we not be better to examine a new dawn for scintillating football, unique stories and rivalries and not to mention a drop of drama across our divisions?
No? Fair enough then...
