Roberts is currently in Los Angeles as pep Guardiola’s side embark on a pre-season tour of the States with the player impressing in outings against Manchester City and Real Madrid.

With Moussa Dembele out until September and Leigh Griffiths facing a race against time to be fit for Wednesday’s game against Rosenborg, Rodgers is well aware that he needs to be able to plug the gaps.

The return of Roberts would delight the Celtic support however the issue is out of Celtic’s hands for the meantime. The Parkhead club have asked to be notified of any change in Roberts’ circumstances.

“Maybe later on,” Rodgers said when asked whether Celtic could revisit Roberts. “I think it all comes down to Man City.

“Pat would be amazing for here. I think everyone could see that. But it all goes down to, one, Manchester City and how they see his future there. He has obviously gone away on tour with them and got some game-time. They will make a decision after that.

“Two, it is also the boy. The boy might not want to come back. The boy might want to play in the Premier League if he has somewhere to do that. He might fancy a spell in Europe.

“The club can bring him here. It’s more going to be whether the player see this as the next step for him.”

Meanwhile, Griffiths and Erik Sviatchenko were on the training ground at Lennoxtown as they look to win their fitness race for Wednesday’s game against Rosenborg in Trondheim.

“Leigh was out on the field today,” said Rodgers. “We’ll get a better gauge over the course of the next couple of days. We’ll need to wait and see.”
