U20 boss Murty still has feet on ground
GRAEME MURTY admits he hasn’t had time to reflect on a whirlwind first year at Rangers as he prepares for his second campaign in Light Blue.
The former Southampton and Norwich youth coach was appointed as Development Squad boss last summer.
But he was then thrust into the spotlight in February when Mark Warburton and David Weir left Ibrox and he took charge of the Gers first team.
Murty was in the dugout for six matches before Pedro Caixinha was appointed in the aftermath of the Old Firm draw at Parkhead.
Now the Light Blues’ head of academy coaching is looking forward to the new campaign as his Under-20 kids look to make the grade at Ibrox.
Murty told RangersTV: “I have had a little bit of everything. I have had frustration, I have had great times, I have had a spell in the big seat as well.
“I didn’t think I would get the breadth of experience I have had. I have to say I am a better coach, a better team-mate to the coaching staff around me for the experiences I have had.
“I am very appreciative, not only for the experiences and the chances, but the level of support from the other members of staff. They have been great.
“They have made sure I haven’t gotten too full of myself by making sure that I am the butt of a few jokes.
“But they have also been incredibly supportive when I have needed it so I am grateful for that as well.
“My job role changed slightly and I have got new responsibilities to try and bed in and lots of new staff to make sure they are getting what they need.
“I have not had a chance to reflect and look back at it yet. But every chance people get they send me a photograph of me doing a headstand or something like that and they remind me.”
