Waggy’s buzzing at switch to Ipswich

- By CHRIS JACK

MARTYNWAGHORN reckons Ipswich will see the best of him in the coming years after he became the latest highprofile exit from Rangers.

The striker put pen-topaper on a two-year deal with Mick McCarthy’s side on Monday after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for his services.

Waghorn scored 44 goals in 79 games for the Gers after making the move north of the border from Wigan during Mark Warburton’s first summer at Ibrox.

He finished top scorer in his first campaign with the Light Blues and helped Warburton’s side win the Championship title and Petrofac Training Cup.

But he has now been allowed to move on and is reunited with former team-mate Joe Garner at Portman Road as Pedro Caixinha continues to reshape his squad.

Waghorn said: “I know about all the history of Ipswich and watched the club when they were in Europe.

“I know what a good club it is so it’s a great opportunity for me.

“I was at Sunderland’s Academy and was a ball boy at games when he (McCarthy) was manager there so I know all about the manager here as well.

“He’s achieved a lot in the game and I’m grateful to him for giving me the chance to come here.

“It’s an exciting move for me. You get a fresh buzz when you join a new club. That’s how I feel. It’s a new start and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m 27 and feel I’m coming into my prime now and feel my best football is yet to come.

“I know some of the lads already, Garns (Garner) from Rangers, Emyr [Huws]. They are good players.

“I have played regularly over the last few years and scored a few goals. I know about the Championship. I played in a couple of play-offs so hopefully I can bring that experience and kick on here and help Ipswich have a good season and have some success”

For mer Ibrox defender Clint Hill has been training with Chesterfield but the League Two side do not currently plan to offer him a contract.
