McInnes hails May impact on his debut
ABERDEEN boss Derek McInnes is convinced Stevie May will prove a major asset after his lively debut for the Dons.
May made his bow on Saturday in a 2-1 victory against Ross County at the Global Energy Stadium, after joining on a four-year deal from Preston North-End.
The 24-year-old former St Johnstone and Sheffield Wednesday forward lasted until the 84th minute when he was substituted to rapturous applause by the large Aberdeen contingent in the ground.
McInnes said: “I thought Stevie May had a brilliant debut, bar scoring. He’ll be disappointed but he’ll get there.
“He showed exactly what he is going to be for us. He was terrific, either into feet or in behind. His work-rate too, considering he had not had a lot of competitive football.
“There were a lot of big performances – defensively we got better as the game went on.”
County took the lead in the second minute when Craig Curran headed home a Christopher Routis free-kick from six yards out.
But Aberdeen gradually came into the game and the visitors drew level in the 23rd minute when Mark Reynolds fired home from 15 yards.
The Dons dominated for long spells after the break and Shay Logan headed home a Gary MackaySteven cross at the back post in the 71st minute for the winner.
However, County almost rescued a point in the dying minutes when substitute Jim O’Brien smashed a 25-yard drive off the face of the crossbar.
Jamie Lindsay, County’s on-loan signing from Celtic, felt the result could have been quite different.
He said: “It was a tight game, we started the second half well and it could have gone either way.”
