Waggy’s joy over Ipswich goal bow

- By MEL CAMERON

FORMER Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn admitted he enjoyed a dream debut with Ipswich Town after netting the winner.

The ex-Ibrox striker moved to the English Championship side last week after falling out of favour under Gers boss Pedro Caixinha.

And he marked his opening game with a late goal after coming off the bench as Ipswich won 2-1 at Barnsley.

The former Sunderland hitman reckons it could hardly have gone much better.

He said: “As a striker and a new signing you always want to hit the ground running, start well and get a goal and to get one here and get the win – I am very pleased with that.

“I don’t think I have anything to prove to anyone. I had a great experience at Rangers with a great bunch of lads.

“The supporters were fantastic to me, but now I am here to do a job for Ipswich so it was great to get off to a good start.

“We turned it around second half and to grind out a win like that is huge for our confidence and morale.

“The way the boys dug out the win in the end, a lot of long balls coming in and a lot of fighting and challenging, it showed the spirit we have in this group.

“If you can get through one-on-one, the keeper doesn’t have much time to react so when I hit it, I kind of knew it was going in.

“You have got to do your bit for the team and it’s a great set of lads, with hunger and desire to get three points.

“Coming here was always going to be tough so getting the three points and going back down there is huge for the lads.”
