Cappielow stint perfect for Doohan, says Gordon

- By GRAEME McGARRY

CELTIC stopper Craig Gordon reckons a loan spell at Morton is the ideal way for young keeper Ross Doohan to take his career to the next level.

The 19-year-old will join the Cappielow men until January and could make his Championship debut today at Inverness.

And Gordon, who spent time at Cowdenbeath before emerging at Hearts, feels a coming-of- age stint in tough surroundings is exactly what Doohan needs.

“I really like Ross,” Gordon said. “He has really come on over the last few years and this is his next big test. I think he can handle it because he was out at Cumbernauld Colts a while ago and played a few games.

“He played in the Scottish Cup against Stirling Albion I think and lost a few goals but that is exactly what he needs to do, he needs to go out and play proper matches. I am sure he will learn a lot from it.”

Doohan revealed he had no hesitation in making the switch to Greenock after hearing his pals at Celtic rave about the club.

Hoops team-mates Jamie Lindsay and Aidan Nesbitt were both farmed out to Jim Duffy’s side last season and Doohan was encouraged by their reports.

He said: “Jamie Lindsay and Nizzy came last year and I spoke to them. They were raving about it and said it was a good place to come, a good manager to work under, and a good group of boys.

“They said it would be a great experience, that the dressing room was great, training is good, and the manager is a great manager and that they’ve got a lot of respect for him.”

Doohan, who has been told by Duffy that he has not simply been signed to provide back-up to Derek Gaston, told the official Morton website: “I’ve got to the age where I need first-team experience and the Morton move came up.

“I’m confident in my ability. I’ll need to be patient and just work hard in training, and if I get my chance I’ll need to take it and cement my place in the team.

“I feel I’m ready if called upon.”
