Water taxi plan for airport

-

PROPOSALS have been put forward which could see passengers enjoy a congestion-free trip to Glasgow airport from the city centre via a water taxi service.

According to plans, passengers would be taken up the Clyde to the airport in 25 minutes.

The proposal has been put forwards by a businessman who runs power boat trips on the Clyde.

John Hillis believes that his plan would offer visitors ‘a stunning introduc- tion to the city’.

Mr Hillis suggested the service could go between the White Cart Water and the city.

Boats would travel at leisurely pace, on a vessel travelling at around 30 miles per hour.

Despite not offering the quickest mode of travel, he says it would offer stunning views of the city and a congestion free journey.

Mr Hillis said: “There are already plans for a tram-train link, and with the existing M8, the river is an obvious third option.

“The views and the experi- ence will make it the best way to arrive in Glasgow, passing landmarks such as the Glasgow Science Centre, the Armadillo and Finnieston Crane.

“It is the classic scene shown on those postcards of the city – with audio commentary along the way.”

Services would leave every half an hour with two 10-seat vessels running the journey.

Golf buggies would then take passengers along the 500m stretch to the airport with their luggage.

These buggies however would eventually be replaced by an electric moving walkway.

Cities which run water taxis including; London, Paris, Venice, Boston and Amsterdam.

In October, last year, plans were resurrected to build a railway link to Glasgow Airport.

The journey time of 16.5 minutes has also been proposed. Under current plans the line would be opened in 2025.
