“It was an incredible day and an honour to be part of the event and promote the awareness of the ParaSports in the process.

“It was an historical day to stand alongside Sir Chris Hoy and Alan Wells MBE. It felt like a dream.”

JULIEN who also volunteered during the Games as a Clyde-sider, was chosen for her work championing parasports.

She added: “Glasgow 2014 integrated the biggest parasports programme to date into the Commonwealth Game’s programme, sending a positive message to Glasgow, Scotland and the world about disability sports.

“It showcased that Glasgow is a welcoming city and also got people thinking more positively about what can be done about accessibility.”

Dilawer Singh, vice-chairman of the Sports Council for Glasgow and a former policeman who spent 36 years on the force, carried the Queen’s Baton passed Ibrox Football Stadium.

He was the first Asian and Sikh police officer in Scotland and has raised thousands for charity through his sporting activities.

Dilawer’s friends and family turned out to see him carry the baton, wearing T-shirts with his photograph on them. He said: “Without a doubt, carrying the baton was an honour. Of course it was.

“It was a privilege to be involved and carry the baton and also very encouraging. These kind of things keep you volunteering and push you on to keep being involved.

“Sport is one thing that brings together all different cultures and nationalities and Glasgow 2014 really showed that.

“My stretch of the route had everyone – Sikhs and Indians, Pakistanis and Africans and indigenous Scots. It was wonderful to see.”

The Queen launched the Gold Coast 2018 baton relay at Buckingham Palace in March.

The relay will span 388 days, 71 countries and more than 200,000 miles through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth before reaching the Gold Coast.
