Waldovow to unpick the locked defences...

- By CHRIS JACK

LEE WALLACE is confident Rangers will find their rhythm in the final third and discover a way to break down stubborn defences in the Premiership.

The Light Blues fired a blank against Hearts on Saturday as they were held to a goalless draw at Ibrox and let another two crucial points slip through their grasp.

It was a frustrating afternoon for boss Pedro Caixinha and captain Wallace knows the Gers need to be sharper in the final third.

He said: “We are trying to do that. The manager is adaptable. Even last year you saw there were a number of formation changes and a number of personnel changes at early times in games, earlier than normal.

“We as players have got to recognise that. We do a lot of work during the week so it doesn’t come as a surprise at three o’clock on a Saturday that Hearts are suddenly playing a low block.

“We knew that, we were aware of that. Our invention when we were arriving in the final third probably could have been better.

“That last pass, that bit of intricate play in or around the box, a more aggressive approach to playing forward passes instead of sideways passes that allow the block to get set and make it harder to get through them and mean we have to recycle and it is slow; maybe those we details we need to be better at.

“A number of teams w i l l come here, barring t he obvious teams, and set up i n that fashion. It is something we need to learn as players.”

Rangers went into the clash determined to make amends for their defeat to Hibernian at Ibrox last weekend. But there was no immediate response from Caixinha’s side as they fell five points off the Premiership pace after just three outings.

Wallace said: “It was very frustrating. We feel we had the ball for long periods and probably didn’t do enough in the final third.

“We had a couple of half chances, Jack Hamilton has made a couple of good saves, they have had a couple of good last-ditch blocks, Christophe Berra has done great for a couple and John Souttar has obviously got back to Josh (Windass) that time.

“Whilst we did feel quite dominant in the game we probably could have been a bit better in that final third and around the box. We could have shown a bit more invention.

“But these are things we are going to look at and try to make better in our game.

“We wanted to get back scoring goals in front of our fans and recapture the moment that we made just prior to the Hibs game. But we will be looking to learn and look forward and be better next week for the Ross County game.”

The pressure will be on Caixinha and his players when they make the trip to Dingwall on Sunday afternoon. But Wallace is confident the Light Blues can get back to winning ways in the Highlands after a poor start to the campaign.

He said: ““Dingwall, Parkhead, Hampden, Ibrox – whatever the venue, whatever the environment, whatever the weather, we want to try and win the game. That is something that we want to get into the boys, that winning mentality. “It is a disappointment we haven’t managed to do that in the last two games, but I keep stressing we will keep looking forward positively and try to turn it around.”
