McInnes: Stevie’s best still to come

- By JOHN McGILL

DEREK McINNES has warned Aberdeen’s rivals there is much more to come from Stevie May after the striker bagged a double to down Dundee in a tetchy affair at Pittodrie.

May struck in either half on his home debut, with Dundee winger Roarie Deacon punishing a misplaced Ryan Christie pass to level the scores in between.

The 2-1 victory maintained Aberdeen’s 100 per cent record three games into the Premiership season, and McInnes was understandably impressed by May’s contribution.

His switch to Aberdeen earlier this month on a four-year deal comes after an injury-hit spell at Preston, where he made only 13 appearances in two seasons.

And while McInnes expects May to make a big impact in red, the Aberdeen boss admits the club must be patient while he returns to match fitness.

He said: “I like the fact he scores goals and can manufacture something for himself.

“He’s the type of striker who finds space which is something you can’t coach.

“It’s clear he’s not had a lot of football in the last couple of years with his injuries and not being selected, but he’s the type of boy who’s worth persevering with.

“I don’t think he’s been at his best in the two games he’s played so far, but even when he’s not at his best he’ll still score goals.

“He’s the type of boy who can be having a quiet game but score the goal that gets you the three points.

“We’ve got to be fair to him and not expect too much when he’s had a long time out, but he’ll contribute while he’s getting there as you saw.”
